Tris singlefin by Chops Lascalles

Most people would like an old Tris in their quiver, because 1. they had some great shapes and finish, 2. Tris the man is somewhat of a legend down here , 3. They have a logo everyone loves. And this must be one of the sweetest 70s Tris' surviving. Not shaped by the man himself but by the very experienced Chops in 1979. At first glance it looks mint, but looking down the deck theres plenty of pressure marks so it has been used quite a lot. It is 6'8 x 20 1/2 x 2 3/4 . 1979 may seem late for a singlefin but actually most of the surfers in the UK were still on singlefins then.

I spoke to Tris recently about old boards, and like many who were there in the day, he's not too fussed about them any more , although he said a board he would love to see again was a Jolly Good - and seemed very surprised when I said I had one. He's more into sailing now and built a big catamaran in the 90s which has now done something like 13 atlantic crossings. He was working on it in Hayle a couple of minutes walk from my house and I was going to take the jolly good down, but now I see the cat's gone so mabye Tris has sailed off into the sunset. He still produces the odd Tris with the old logo which he calls 'gentleman's boards' , priced accordingly.

This Tris also must be the only UK vintage board to star on the cover of a modern surf mag, on this Surf cover from 2000 when it had the old 70s wax still on it.
